Can cold sores cause eczema herpeticum?

Eczema herpeticum is a widespread herpes infection on skin that is already inflamed, cracked, or unusually vulnerable. It may begin with clusters of closely grouped blisters or small punched-out sores, followed by soreness, burning, fever, tiredness, or swollen nearby glands. The rash can extend beyond the original eczema patches. A person with eczema does not develop eczema herpeticum from every cold sore, but active herpes lesions can seed other areas through contact, especially when skin is broken or scratched.

Avoid touching or scratching a cold sore, and wash your hands after any contact. Do not share towels, razors, cosmetics, or lip products while a lesion is active. Keep eczema areas gently clean and follow the treatment plan already provided for your skin. If new painful blisters or round erosions appear on eczema-affected skin, contact a clinician promptly; antiviral treatment may be needed and works best when started early. Do not put household remedies or strong antiseptics on the rash.

Seek same-day medical care for rapidly spreading blisters, punched-out sores, marked pain, fever, or feeling suddenly unwell. Get urgent help if the rash is near the eye, vision changes occur, or you cannot keep fluids down. Babies, people with extensive eczema, and anyone with a weakened immune system should be assessed quickly because infection can progress beyond the skin.
