This sudden chemical load can overwhelm the kidneys and disturb potassium, phosphate, calcium, and uric acid levels. The resulting changes can affect the kidneys, heart, muscles, and nervous system.
Why tumour breakdown can cause illness
Tumour lysis syndrome is more likely when a cancer responds quickly to treatment or there is a large amount of treatment-sensitive disease. It can occur after therapy begins and, less often, before treatment because cancer cells are already breaking down.
Symptoms are not a reliable early warning. Blood tests may show changes before a person feels unwell, which is why the team assesses risk in advance and schedules chemistry and kidney-function checks around treatment.
Prevention and monitoring
Follow the fluid plan given by your team and attend every arranged blood test. Depending on risk, clinicians may give intravenous fluids and medicine to prevent or lower uric acid, and may begin treatment in a setting where blood chemistry, urine output, and heart rhythm can be watched closely.
Do not force extra fluids if you have been told to limit them because of heart or kidney disease. Bring an up-to-date medicine list, and check before taking supplements, anti-inflammatory painkillers, or other non-prescribed products that could complicate kidney care.
When urgent help is needed
Contact the oncology emergency service immediately after treatment if you develop much less urine, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, severe weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, unusual drowsiness, confusion, or a racing or irregular heartbeat. Do not wait for the next planned blood test.
Call emergency services for a seizure, collapse, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or loss of consciousness. State that cancer treatment has recently started and tumour lysis syndrome is a concern.
