Can atopic dermatitis cause eczema herpeticum?

Eczema herpeticum is a viral infection that can develop on skin affected by atopic dermatitis. It may begin with clusters of painful, similar-looking blisters or small round sores that can become crusted or ooze. Fever, tiredness, swollen glands, or a sudden worsening of eczema can occur. This is different from an ordinary flare and can affect the face or area around the eyes, where complications may be more serious.

Do not pick, pop, or scratch suspected blisters. Wash hands after touching the area, keep towels and bedding separate, and avoid close skin contact until a clinician gives advice.
