Can acid reflux cause laryngitis?

The larynx contains the vocal cords and sits above the windpipe. Refluxed stomach contents can inflame this delicate area, leading to hoarseness, a weak voice, throat clearing, a cough or a sensation of something in the throat. Some people have these symptoms without noticeable heartburn.

Laryngitis also commonly follows a viral illness, heavy voice use, smoke exposure or another irritation. The timing of symptoms, examination of the throat and voice, and your wider health history help distinguish these possibilities.

Rest your voice, drink water, and avoid whispering, shouting and smoke while the irritation settles. If reflux seems linked to symptoms, try smaller meals and avoid lying down soon after eating. Raising the head end of the bed may help when symptoms are worse overnight.

Do not repeatedly clear your throat; sipping water or swallowing can be gentler. A clinician or pharmacist can discuss reflux treatment, particularly if symptoms recur or continue beyond a short illness.

Arrange medical advice for persistent hoarseness, repeated episodes, painful swallowing, or a voice change that affects work. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or coughing blood.
