Can acanthosis nigricans cause dark underarms?

Acanthosis nigricans often appears in body folds such as the armpits, neck, or groin. The colour may develop gradually, and the skin can feel more textured than nearby skin. It is not simply dirt, so vigorous scrubbing or bleaching products may irritate it without addressing the cause. Similar darkening can also follow friction, shaving irritation, deodorant sensitivity, or another skin condition, which is why an examination matters.

A clinician may ask when the colour began, whether it is spreading, and whether anyone in your family has had similar changes. They may also review medicines and general health factors that can be associated with acanthosis nigricans.

Book a routine dermatology or primary-care appointment if the change is new, persistent, or increasing. Until then, wash gently, keep the fold dry, and avoid tight clothing, harsh scrubs, and products that sting. Do not use unprescribed lightening creams or steroid creams in the armpit. If a clinician confirms acanthosis nigricans, treating the underlying contributor and reducing irritation may improve the skin over time; the dark colour may not change immediately.

Arrange prompt medical review if the darkening appears quickly, involves many skin folds, becomes painful, cracks, bleeds, smells unusual, or is accompanied by a new lump, fever, marked thirst, or unexplained weight change. These features do not diagnose one cause, but they deserve assessment rather than home treatment alone.
