Burning nose and sneezing: what to know

Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing, itching, a clear runny nose, and congestion after exposure to pollen, pets, or house dust mites. A common cold may add a sore throat, cough, tiredness, or thicker mucus. Dry air, strong fragrances, smoke, cleaning products, and repeated wiping can irritate the nasal lining and the skin around the nostrils. Symptoms may overlap, so their timing and associated features matter more than one sensation.

Move away from smoke, fragrance, dust, or other suspected triggers. Use a gentle saline spray or rinse with safe prepared water, keep the room comfortably humid, and apply a bland moisturiser to irritated outer skin. Wash hands and avoid rubbing or forceful nose blowing. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication if symptoms fit an allergic pattern. Follow product directions and ask about suitability if you are pregnant or take other medicines.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction after an exposure. Arrange medical review for persistent one-sided blockage, repeated nosebleeds, facial pain, fever that is worsening, or symptoms that interfere with sleep. A clinician can examine the nasal lining and consider allergy or infection treatment.

Ask whether your pattern is more consistent with allergic rhinitis, a common cold, irritation, or another nasal problem; which triggers to avoid; whether allergy medication fits; and when testing is useful.
