What should you know about bumps on penile skin?

Small, stable, skin-coloured bumps without pain or discharge can be harmless normal variation, while red or tender bumps may reflect friction or follicle inflammation. Itching in a warm, moist area can occur with heat rash. A scaly, purple-toned or persistently irritated patch needs assessment because inflammatory conditions can affect genital skin. Do not squeeze, pierce or burn a bump; this can injure delicate tissue and obscure its appearance.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Pause shaving and avoid fragranced products, tight underwear and sexual contact that causes rubbing until the skin settles. Note whether the bumps are on the shaft, foreskin or glans, and whether they change, itch, hurt, crust or leak. Avoid using steroid, antibiotic or wart-removal products on genital skin unless a clinician has advised you.

Arrange a prompt dermatology or sexual-health assessment for a new unexplained cluster, sores, blisters, ulcers, discharge, bleeding, marked swelling, pain when urinating or a bump that keeps growing. Seek urgent care for severe swelling, inability to pass urine, fever with rapidly spreading redness, or intense pain. A clinician can inspect the lesions and choose testing or treatment based on the findings.
