Bumps on neck under skin

A superficial bump may be linked to a blocked or inflamed follicle, heat rash, milia, or another skin condition. A deeper, tender lump can occur when nearby tissue reacts to an infection or inflammation. A lump that moves, feels fixed, changes in size, or appears with a sore throat, dental problem, fever, or skin lesion gives a clinician useful clues. The location and depth cannot be judged reliably from a description alone.

Do not squeeze, repeatedly press, or try to puncture the area. Use gentle cleansing and note when it appeared, whether it is growing, and whether the overlying skin is red or warm. Avoid tight collars and irritating products. Arrange an examination if it persists, recurs, or is difficult to classify; the clinician may check the skin and nearby lymph-node regions and decide whether further evaluation is needed.

Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, marked tenderness, warmth, spreading redness, drainage, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight change, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. Urgent assessment is needed if the swelling compromises the airway or follows a severe allergic reaction. A persistent firm or fixed lump also deserves medical review even without pain.

Ask whether the lump seems to arise from skin, a follicle, or a lymph node; what changes to monitor; and whether imaging, testing, or treatment is appropriate.
