Bumps on my face after shaving

A close shave can leave a cut hair with a sharp tip that curves into nearby skin, creating an ingrown hair and local inflammation. Razor bumps may be skin-coloured, red, itchy, or tender. Folliculitis can look similar when follicles become inflamed. Persistent rough bumps away from the beard area may instead fit keratosis pilaris. New products, pressure from a mask, or repeated passes over the same area can add irritation.

Use warm water, a gentle cleanser, and a clean sharp razor. Shave in the direction of hair growth with lubrication, using light strokes and fewer passes. Do not dig out hairs, squeeze bumps, or shave over open skin. A fragrance-free moisturiser may reduce dryness. If shaving repeatedly causes inflamed bumps, a clinician can discuss topical options or laser hair removal and consider your skin tone and hair type.

Get medical advice for worsening pain, pus, spreading warmth or redness, fever, scarring, or bumps that keep returning. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing or swallowing trouble. Review is also sensible when a spot bleeds, forms a persistent sore, or does not resemble the other shaving bumps.

Ask whether the problem is ingrown hair, folliculitis, or another rash; which shaving changes may help; and whether treatment should address inflammation, infection, or hair regrowth.
