Bumps on the back of the head after a haircut

Small itchy or tender spots around clipped hairs can fit [Folliculitis](/conditions/folliculitis/), an inflammation of hair follicles. A hair that curls back into skin may cause an [Ingrown Hairs](/symptoms/ingrown-hairs/) pattern. Recurrent firm bumps along the lower scalp or nape after very close cuts may be [Razor Bumps](/conditions/pseudofolliculitis-barbae/). Smooth rough bumps that were present before the haircut can have a different cause, such as [Keratosis Pilaris](/conditions/keratosis-pilaris/).

Keep the nape clean and dry, avoid scratching, and pause close shaving until the skin settles. Use a clean towel and avoid tight collars or helmet friction over sore areas. Do not dig for trapped hairs or share clippers. Book an assessment if bumps keep returning, form pus, bleed, become firm, or leave thickened scars or dark marks. A clinician may need to check for infection or a scarring follicle disorder rather than treating the appearance alone.

Ask whether the pattern is folliculitis, ingrown hairs, or razor bumps; whether your haircut technique is aggravating it; and what cleanser or treatment is suitable for the scalp and neck.
