Bullous Impetigo: Signs, Spread, and Treatment

The blisters may enlarge, appear in new areas, or cause soreness and itch. Bacteria can enter through small breaks in skin; eczema such as atopic dermatitis can make the barrier easier to disrupt. Crusting skin is a useful description, not a diagnosis, because other conditions can crust as well.

Arrange a clinical assessment and keep blisters covered with a clean dressing if possible. Wash hands after touching the area, avoid sharing towels or razors, and launder clothing and bedding regularly. Do not pop blisters or peel crusts. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for limited disease or antibiotics for skin infection when wider treatment is needed.

Seek prompt care if lesions spread quickly, the skin becomes hot and painful, fever develops, or the person seems unwell. Urgent assessment is appropriate when the eyes or mouth are involved, a newborn is affected, or there is facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
