Bruising Easily and Itchy Skin: What to Know

Persistent itching can cause rubbing or scratching that breaks tiny vessels and leaves bruises. Dry, inflamed, or allergy-related skin may itch before marks appear. Easy bruising can also be unrelated to the itch, including after a medicine change or repeated minor knocks.

Note when the itching began, where bruises appear, whether you remember an injury, and any new medicine, supplement, soap, or cosmetic. Use a plain moisturiser on dry skin, keep nails short, and try a cool cloth instead of scratching. Avoid fragranced products on irritated areas and do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. Photograph new bruises in consistent light and arrange a clinical review if they keep appearing without a clear cause.

Seek urgent help for bruising with heavy bleeding, blood in urine or stool, severe headache, faintness, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or sudden weakness. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for many new bruises, large unexplained marks, fever, painful purple spots, yellowing skin, or rapidly worsening itch. A clinician may examine the skin, review medicines, and decide whether blood tests are needed.
