Brown vaginal discharge after sex

Friction can irritate dry or delicate vaginal or cervical tissue. The discharge may also relate to a period, a cervical change or an infection, so timing and accompanying symptoms help guide evaluation.

A trace of blood can mix with normal vaginal fluid and become brown as it ages. Possible sources include a minor surface injury, vaginal dryness, inflammation of the cervix, a cervical polyp or hormonal spotting. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can present with bleeding after sex or altered discharge, while pelvic inflammatory disease can present with abnormal discharge, pelvic pain, pain during sex or bleeding between periods.

Discharge that is thick and itchy may point toward thrush, whereas a strong odour, pelvic discomfort or urinary burning can suggest another infection. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause, and treatment should match a confirmed diagnosis.

Pause sex if it is painful or continues to trigger bleeding. Avoid vaginal douching and fragranced products, which can worsen irritation. Note where you are in your menstrual cycle, whether condoms were used, any new sexual partner, contraception, pregnancy possibility, odour, itching, pain and urinary symptoms.

Arrange a clinical review if the discharge recurs, has no clear link to a period, or comes with other symptoms. A clinician may offer an examination, pregnancy testing or swabs. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or antifungal medicine because these treat different causes.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, fever, vomiting, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Prompt assessment is also sensible for foul-smelling discharge or if you feel systemically unwell. Any bleeding after menopause should be checked even when light.

You could ask whether the blood appears to come from the vagina or cervix, which infection tests suit your symptoms, whether pregnancy testing is relevant, and when persistent bleeding would require imaging or a closer examination of the cervix.
