Brown spotting when pregnant

Blood turns brown as it ages, so the discharge may reflect a small earlier bleed. Pregnancy makes the cervix more prone to bleeding, sometimes after sex or an examination. Vaginal or cervical infection can also cause spotting, especially with unusual discharge, odour, itching, or discomfort.

Bleeding can also accompany pregnancy complications. Colour by itself cannot show where the blood came from or whether the pregnancy is developing as expected; the timing, quantity, pain, and clinical findings matter.

Use a pad or pantyliner so you can observe the amount and whether the blood becomes red; avoid tampons while bleeding. Write down when it started, whether clots or tissue appeared, and any cramps, pelvic pressure, fever, urinary symptoms, or fluid leakage.

Contact your maternity service for advice, even if the spotting stops. They may ask about your pregnancy stage and blood group and decide whether you need an examination, ultrasound, blood tests, or infection testing.

Go for urgent care if bleeding is heavy or increasing, pain is severe or focused on one side, you feel faint or very dizzy, or you have shoulder-tip pain. Later in pregnancy, contractions, reduced baby movement, or a gush of fluid alongside bleeding also require immediate maternity assessment.

Ask what is most likely to be bleeding, whether the pregnancy location and development need checking, and whether your blood group changes management. Confirm who to call if the discharge returns and which changes mean you should go directly to urgent care.
