Is brown spotting a sign of pregnancy?

Brown discharge usually contains a small amount of blood that has darkened before leaving the body. It may appear near an expected period, after sex, or when the cervix or vagina is irritated. None of these patterns can establish whether conception has occurred.

Pregnancy is established with a pregnancy test, not by the colour or amount of discharge. If a test is positive, tell your maternity clinician about bleeding so they can consider its timing and any accompanying symptoms.

If your period is due or late, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions. Testing too early can produce an unclear or negative result despite an early pregnancy, so follow the product advice about repeating the test.

Track the spotting, including its colour, amount, duration, and relationship to sex. If it continues, has an unpleasant smell, or comes with itching, pain when urinating, or pelvic discomfort, arrange an appointment to check for infection or another source of bleeding.

If pregnancy is possible or confirmed, seek urgent medical care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need rapid assessment because an ectopic pregnancy or significant blood loss may be present.

You could ask when a pregnancy test will be informative, whether an examination or infection test is needed, and what symptoms should change the urgency. Mention the date of your last period, contraception, test results, and any previous ectopic pregnancy.
