Light brown spotting in early pregnancy

A small trace of blood can turn brown as it takes longer to leave the vagina. Early in pregnancy, light spotting can follow cervical irritation, including after sex or an internal examination, because the cervix has an increased blood supply. Infection and pregnancy complications are other possibilities, and appearance alone cannot distinguish them.

The details around the spotting are more informative than colour by itself. A clinician will want to know the amount, whether it is only visible when wiping, whether it is continuing, and whether it comes with cramps, one-sided pelvic pain, fever, unpleasant-smelling discharge, dizziness, or weakness.

Tell your pregnancy care provider about the spotting, even if it remains light. Record when it started and any change in colour or flow. A sanitary pad can help you judge the amount; avoid inserting a tampon. If you know your blood group is Rh negative, mention this when seeking advice because the team will decide whether any additional care is appropriate.

Depending on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy, the clinician may recommend an examination, infection testing, pregnancy hormone blood tests, or ultrasound. Follow-up can be needed when a scan is done too early to clearly show the pregnancy's location or development.

Seek emergency care for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, pain focused on one side, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, pronounced dizziness, or unusual weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, worsening cramps, or discharge with an unpleasant smell. Urgency comes from these symptoms and the amount of bleeding, not from the brown colour.

You can ask whether your symptoms need an ultrasound or blood tests, when to report a change in flow, whether sex or exercise should be modified while bleeding continues, and who to contact outside clinic hours. Also confirm the timing of any planned repeat test and what it is expected to clarify.
