Brown keratosis pilaris: what to know

How the structures involved in Keratosis Pilaris differ from normal

Short answer

Brown keratosis pilaris usually consists of rough follicle-centred bumps with colour change after irritation, rather than a dangerous growth.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Texture
Small, rough bumps centred on hair follicles.
Helpful habit
Moisturise after bathing and avoid vigorous scrubbing.

How it can appear

Keratosis pilaris develops when keratin collects around hair follicles. The skin may feel like fine sandpaper, with small bumps on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. Brown or grey-brown colour can be more noticeable in richly pigmented skin or after picking and rubbing. It is not the same as an infection, although inflamed follicles or ingrown hairs can sometimes be present at the same time. See [Keratosis Pilaris](/conditions/keratosis-pilaris/) and [Skin Bumps](/symptoms/skin-bumps/) for related information.

Ways to calm roughness

Moisturise soon after bathing with an emollient. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may soften plugs when used as directed, but irritation can worsen colour, so introduce one product at a time. Do not scrub forcefully or pick the bumps. A dermatologist may consider topical retinoids, a chemical peel, or laser hair removal when appropriate for the pattern and skin type. These options need individual assessment because redness and temporary darkening can occur.

When to arrange an assessment

Seek review if bumps become painful, hot, pus-filled, rapidly spreading, or very itchy, since another condition may be involved. Arrange an appointment if the diagnosis is uncertain, home care causes burning, or the colour change is new and limited to one unusual lesion. A clinician can check whether ingrown hairs, eczema, or folliculitis is contributing.

Useful questions

Does this pattern fit keratosis pilaris? Which moisturiser or active ingredient should I try first? Would a retinoid, peel, or another procedure suit my skin tone and symptoms?
