Brown discharge and spotting after a period

Blood darkens as it remains in the vagina and mixes with normal discharge. A brief trace at the end of otherwise familiar menstrual bleeding may therefore look brown rather than red.

Spotting outside your expected period can be related to hormonal contraception, a change in cycle timing, irritation after sex, an infection such as chlamydia, or growths such as cervical or endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids. Changes affecting cells of the cervix or womb are less common possibilities that a clinician may need to exclude.

The pattern provides useful clues: whether discharge has an unpleasant smell, whether bleeding follows sex, and whether pelvic pain, itching, pain when urinating, or fever occurs. If pregnancy is possible, unusual bleeding with pelvic or abdominal pain requires urgent evaluation for an ectopic pregnancy.

Keep a cycle note showing the first and last day of menstrual flow, when brown discharge appears, its amount, and whether it follows sex. Include contraception, recently missed doses, new medicines, pregnancy possibility, pain, odour, and urinary or vaginal symptoms. This detail helps a clinician decide which examination or tests may be useful.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecology or primary-care clinician if spotting recurs, appears between periods, follows sex, or represents a new change for you. A sexual-health clinic can assess possible infection. Testing may involve a pregnancy test, infection swab or urine sample, examination of the vagina and cervix, blood tests, or imaging, depending on your history.

Seek urgent medical help if you have missed a period or could be pregnant and develop unusual bleeding with abdominal or pelvic pain. Immediate assessment is also needed for severe or one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, or heavy bleeding.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, worsening pelvic pain, foul-smelling discharge, or bleeding after menopause. These features can point to infection or another condition that should not wait for a routine cycle to pass.

Ask whether the timing fits leftover menstrual blood or counts as bleeding between periods, whether pregnancy and infection testing are appropriate, and whether your contraceptive method could explain the pattern. If the symptom persists, ask what follow-up or imaging would help identify a cervical or uterine cause.
