Brown blood spotting after your period: what to know

A small amount of menstrual blood may leave the womb after the main flow has ended. It can look brown because it has oxidised before leaving the vagina. Hormonal contraception, missed pills, cycle changes, ovulation, or sex-related cervical irritation can also cause light spotting.

If the pattern keeps returning, other explanations include chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, endometrial polyps, uterine fibroids, or womb cancer. These conditions are not diagnosed from colour or timing alone. Bleeding after menopause is not considered a normal period tail and should be reviewed promptly.

Write down the last day of your period, when spotting begins, how much appears, and whether it follows sex, exercise, contraception changes, or a missed dose. Note cramps, pelvic pain, unpleasant discharge, fever, or pain passing urine. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Arrange a routine appointment when spotting recurs or has no clear trigger; an examination and targeted tests may be needed.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Get prompt medical advice for bleeding with fever, feeling very unwell, possible pregnancy with one-sided pain, or any vaginal bleeding after menopause. Do not use the brown colour by itself to decide that bleeding is harmless.

Ask whether your contraception could explain the timing, whether you need pregnancy or infection testing, how your cervix and womb will be assessed, and what symptoms should lead you to seek urgent help.
