Bronchitis and sore throat: what to know

Viruses can irritate the throat, nose and bronchial tubes during the same illness. Coughing, mouth breathing and mucus draining from the nose can then keep the throat sore. The common cold, influenza and COVID-19 may include throat pain, while allergic rhinitis can cause irritation from nasal drainage. Strep throat and tonsillitis may cause marked throat pain and swallowing difficulty; glandular fever can bring pronounced tiredness and swollen glands. Acid reflux can irritate the throat without causing a respiratory infection. These patterns overlap, so the full symptom picture matters.

Drink cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, and avoid smoke and alcohol-based mouth irritants. Rest your voice and use a humidified room if dry air worsens the irritation. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief, especially if you take regular medicines or have a chronic condition. Do not take antibiotics unless a clinician prescribes them for a bacterial diagnosis.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, severe dehydration, confusion or blue lips. Arrange prompt assessment for severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, persistent high fever, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than easing. A clinician may examine your throat and chest and decide whether testing is appropriate.
