Bronchitis and laryngitis symptoms

Bronchitis affects the larger airways and commonly causes a cough, mucus and chest irritation. Laryngitis affects the voice box, so a rough, weak or absent voice is prominent. A common cold can inflame both areas, making cough and hoarseness appear at the same time.

Sore throat may come from the same infection, repeated coughing or voice strain. Acid reflux can also irritate the voice box, particularly when hoarseness is worse after meals or on waking. Symptoms alone cannot establish the cause, especially when they persist or keep returning.

Rest your voice by speaking less and using a normal, gentle voice rather than whispering. Drink fluids, avoid smoke and dusty air, and use moist air if it feels soothing. Do not repeatedly clear your throat; sipping water can reduce that urge.

Treat reflux triggers you recognise, such as lying down soon after eating, and follow medicine advice from a pharmacist or clinician. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed, because many cases follow viruses and do not improve with antibiotics.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly worsening throat swelling or confusion. Arrange a GP consultation if hoarseness lasts beyond the expected illness, keeps recurring, or comes with coughing blood, unexplained weight loss or persistent pain.

Ask whether the voice change is consistent with laryngitis, reflux or another cause, and whether your lungs or throat need examination. Describe your cough, voice changes, throat pain, reflux symptoms, smoking exposure and how the illness has changed over time.
