Brittle nails with vertical ridges

Short answer
Brittle nails with vertical ridges often benefit from moisture and less mechanical or chemical stress, but new, painful, or changing findings deserve a nail assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding vertical ridges
Vertical ridges extend lengthwise from the cuticle toward the tip. They may stand out when the nail plate is dry or naturally uneven, and repeated soaking, drying, solvents, and minor knocks can add splitting at the ridge. A ridge on one nail may follow an injury or pressure point. Several nails changing together can reflect shared exposure, inflammation of the surrounding skin, infection, or another health factor. Yellowing, thickening, crumbling, lifting, or tenderness changes the picture and should not be dismissed as simple dryness.
Practical nail care
Trim nails so the free edge does not catch, then file gently in one direction. Massage a thick hand cream or plain ointment into the nail and cuticle after washing and before bed. Use gloves for cleaning, gardening, and prolonged water exposure; change damp gloves promptly. Avoid biting, pushing or cutting cuticles, scraping ridges, and buffing the plate. Take a break from artificial nails and frequent remover. Photograph the nails periodically in similar light so a clinician can see whether a line is moving with growth.
Warning signs
Seek a routine review if vertical ridges are persistent, worsening, or associated with repeated splitting despite protection. Get prompt advice for redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, marked pain, or lifting. A new dark streak, an irregular streak that changes, or color spreading onto the skin beside the nail needs timely assessment. If an injury caused severe pain or blood collects under the nail, ask for advice rather than trying to drain it yourself.
What to ask
Ask whether the ridges look like dryness, trauma, inflammation, or infection; whether a sample is needed; and which products or tasks to avoid. Ask how to protect the nail during work and what improvement should look like as it grows. Share any rash, recent illness, injury, or new medicine.

Questions people ask
Are vertical ridges harmful by themselves?
They can be a harmless surface pattern, but brittleness or new associated changes may warrant an examination.
Will moisturizer erase a ridge?
Moisturizer can reduce dryness and snagging; it cannot remove a structural ridge immediately.
