Brittle nails treatment: what to know

Nails may become fragile after repeated soaking, detergents, solvents, cosmetic procedures, picking or impact. They can also change with eczema, psoriasis, nutritional problems, thyroid disease, medication effects or a fungal infection. Thickening, yellow or white discoloration, crumbling and lifting can point toward infection, but appearance is not enough to identify it. Trim nails straight across and smooth snags with a fine file. Apply a plain moisturizer to the nails and surrounding skin after hand washing. Avoid cutting cuticles deeply or inserting tools under the nail. If a specific condition is found, treatment may include a prescribed topical product or medicine; follow the directions and allow time for healthy nail to replace the damaged portion.

Seek assessment if a nail remains brittle despite reducing irritation, or if several nails change. Get prompt advice for pain, swelling, warmth, drainage, rapidly spreading discoloration, fever, a new dark streak, or a nail that lifts without a clear injury. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or poor circulation should arrange care early for a painful or infected-looking nail.
