Brittle nails from gel polish

The gel itself is not the only issue. Nail preparation can thin the surface, and forceful removal can lift layers that are still attached. Repeated curing and removal may leave nails dry, tender, ridged, or prone to splitting. Allergy to a gel ingredient can cause itching, redness, swelling, or a rash around the fingers and sometimes elsewhere after contact. Remove gel gently and never peel, scrape, or bite it off. Give damaged nails a break from overlays while the affected portion grows out. Keep them short, moisturise the nail and surrounding skin several times daily, and use gloves for wet household tasks. If you return to gel services, choose a trained professional, avoid aggressive buffing, and stop if burning, itching, or swelling develops. A clinician can assess persistent damage or a suspected product allergy and advise whether testing is needed.

Arrange an appointment if pain, lifting, discolouration, or splitting persists after the product is removed. Seek prompt advice for facial swelling, widespread hives, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening finger swelling after a manicure. A dark streak that is new or changing should also be examined, especially when it does not grow out with the nail.

Ask whether the damage is mechanical, irritant, allergic, or infectious; whether the nail needs testing; which products to avoid; and how to manage any rash around the fingers.
