Brittle nails and peeling skin: possible causes and care

Hands can become dry and peel after frequent washing, sanitiser, detergents, solvents, cold air or friction. The same exposure can strip moisture from nails, leaving them rough, splitting or layered. Itchy, cracked or scaly skin around the nails may instead point to dermatitis, especially after contact with a cosmetic or cleaning product. Thick, crumbly or discoloured nails with skin scaling can also occur with nail fungus. The pattern, timing and affected areas help separate these possibilities; brittle nails alone do not identify a single cause.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Apply a thick cream or ointment immediately and repeat whenever the skin feels tight. Wear protective gloves for cleaning and wet work, with a breathable liner if needed, and replace damp gloves. Keep nails short, file snags smoothly and avoid biting, cuticle cutting, picking and harsh polish removers. If a new product preceded the peeling, stop it and keep a note of the timing and affected sites. Do not apply steroid, antifungal or antibiotic products to the nail without advice when the diagnosis is unclear.

See a clinician if peeling skin is widespread, repeatedly cracks, remains itchy despite removing irritants, or occurs with ongoing nail changes. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, or difficulty using the hand. A new dark streak or a nail lifting from its bed also warrants assessment. Examination may show whether the main problem is dermatitis, infection, trauma or another skin condition.
