Brittle nails after gel: what may help

Fragility after gel may follow surface filing before application, peeling or scraping during removal, repeated soaking in remover, or irritation from products. The nail may feel thin, rough, flexible or tender, and layers may lift at the free edge. The visible damage is in the existing nail and must grow out; covering it immediately can hide worsening changes or add more stress. If there is thickening, crumbling, unusual colour or debris, consider that nail fungus can produce similar signs and needs proper assessment.

Do not peel gel from the nail or force an adhered layer away. Have removal done gently, without aggressive scraping, and keep nails short while the surface is vulnerable. Use cream or ointment on the nail folds and nail surface after washing. Wear gloves for water, cleaning products and manual work, but let hands dry between uses. Avoid buffing, cuticle cutting, extensions and another gel application until tenderness and peeling have settled. If the skin around the nail is itchy or blistered, stop the suspected product and ask for advice, since contact irritation can continue after removal.

Arrange a review if nails remain painful, separate from the nail bed, or keep deteriorating after the gel is removed. Seek prompt care for redness, warmth, swelling, pus, marked throbbing, or a new dark streak. A clinician can tell mechanical damage from infection or product-related dermatitis and recommend testing or treatment when needed.
