Short answer

Brittle nail care focuses on keeping nails protected, reducing water and chemical exposure, and checking persistent changes for an underlying problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Typical changes
Splitting, peeling, roughness, or easy breakage.
Useful protection
Gloves for cleaning and moisturiser after hand washing.

What brittle nails can mean

Brittle nails may split at the free edge, peel in layers, or develop rough ridges. Repeated soaking and drying, detergents, solvents, nail polish remover, filing in both directions, and picking can weaken the nail plate. Trauma from manicures or pressure on the fingertips may affect one nail, while changes across several nails can have a broader cause. Nail fungus is one possibility, especially when a nail also becomes thickened, discoloured, crumbly, or separated from the nail bed, but brittleness alone does not establish that diagnosis.

The nail grows slowly, so improvement may take time after the trigger is removed. A clinician can inspect the nail and surrounding skin and decide whether testing is needed.

Care that reduces splitting

Keep nails short and smooth sharp edges with a fine file used in one direction. Wear gloves for cleaning and prolonged contact with water, then dry hands and apply a thick moisturiser to the nails and cuticles. Avoid cutting or pushing back cuticles, biting, picking, and using nails as tools. Take breaks from artificial nails or frequent polish removal if the plate is peeling. Do not start supplements or antifungal products based only on appearance; the right treatment depends on the cause and may require an examination.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice if the change persists despite gentler care, affects several nails, or is accompanied by pain, swelling, warmth, pus, bleeding, or a nail lifting from its bed. Arrange assessment for a new dark streak, a rapidly changing mark, or skin changes around one nail. A clinician may ask about work exposures, manicure products, injuries, skin conditions, diet, and medicines before recommending testing or treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what features distinguish simple plate damage from nail fungus or a skin condition, whether a sample should be tested, and which products to stop. Ask how to protect the nail during growth and what signs would mean the treatment needs review.

Questions people ask

Can water make brittle nails worse?

Repeated wetting and drying can weaken the nail plate, especially with detergents. Gloves and moisturiser can reduce that exposure.

Are brittle nails always nail fungus?

No. Brittleness has many possible causes. Thickening, crumbly material, separation, or persistent discolouration deserves an examination for Nail Fungus or another condition.
