Short answer

Bright red spotting at five weeks needs prompt advice from your maternity clinician, especially if pain, dizziness, or heavier bleeding develops.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What the colour shows
Bright red blood is fresh, but its colour does not identify the cause.
Useful monitoring
Record the amount, timing, pain, clots, and any dizziness.
First contact
Call your maternity service or obstetric clinician for prompt advice.

The short answer

A small amount of bleeding can occur in an ongoing pregnancy, but colour alone cannot show where the blood came from or whether the pregnancy is developing normally.

What fresh spotting may mean

Bright red blood is fresh blood. It may come from a sensitive cervix, including after sex or an examination, or from bleeding within the uterus. Early pregnancy bleeding can also accompany pregnancy loss or an ectopic pregnancy, so symptoms and examination findings matter more than shade alone.

At five weeks, an ultrasound may not yet answer every question. A clinician may combine your dates, symptoms, examination, blood tests, and follow-up imaging to understand what is happening.

What to do now

Contact your maternity service or obstetric clinician today for individual advice. Note when the spotting began, whether it is increasing, whether there are clots, and whether you have cramps or one-sided pain. Use a pad rather than a tampon so you can observe the amount.

Tell the clinician your last menstrual period, any fertility treatment, previous ectopic pregnancy, and your blood group if known. Do not stop prescribed pregnancy medicines unless the prescriber tells you to.

When urgent care is needed

Go to emergency care now if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or mainly on one side, you have shoulder-tip pain, feel faint or very dizzy, collapse, or look pale and unwell. These features can occur with significant blood loss or an ectopic pregnancy and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Seek prompt reassessment if the spotting continues, returns, or is joined by fever, worsening cramps, unpleasant-smelling discharge, or passage of tissue.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether you need an examination, pregnancy-hormone blood tests, or an ultrasound, and when any test should be repeated. Also ask where to seek help if the bleeding changes outside clinic hours and whether your blood group affects the care plan.

Questions people ask

Can a pregnancy continue after spotting at five weeks?

Yes. Spotting can occur in an ongoing pregnancy, although bleeding can also have causes that need assessment. Your symptoms and follow-up findings provide more information than the colour alone.

Should I use a pregnancy test to check whether everything is fine?

A home test may remain positive and cannot confirm the pregnancy's location or development. A clinician may use blood tests and ultrasound when appropriate.

Is one-sided pain with spotting urgent?

Yes. One-sided pelvic pain with early pregnancy bleeding warrants urgent assessment, particularly with shoulder-tip pain, faintness, or dizziness.
