What should you know about breastfeeding during hiccups?

Short answer
You can usually continue breastfeeding during brief hiccups, but pause if the baby is distressed and seek advice when episodes are persistent or accompanied by other symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- During a feed
- Pause for comfort if hiccups interrupt sucking.
- Avoid
- Do not shake, startle or give water to a baby for hiccups.
Why hiccups happen
A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by a brief closure of the voice box. In babies, swallowing air, feeding quickly, a full stomach or a change in temperature can trigger episodes. Hiccups may appear during a feed or shortly afterward and do not automatically mean illness. Frequent hiccups with arching, irritability, coughing or frequent spit-up can occur with [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/), while ongoing upper-abdominal discomfort may need assessment for another cause such as [Gastritis](/conditions/gastritis/).
Making feeds easier
If the baby remains comfortable, let the hiccups settle and offer the breast gently. If they interrupt sucking, stop for a short burping break, hold the baby upright, then try again when calm. Keep the latch comfortable and avoid forcing the baby to continue. Smaller, more frequent feeds may help some babies, but discuss changes if weight gain or feeding stamina is a concern. Never frighten, shake, or startle a baby to stop hiccups, and do not give water or remedies without professional advice.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if hiccups repeatedly prevent feeding, disturb sleep, or occur with breathing difficulty, blue colour, forceful vomiting, poor weight gain, fever or marked lethargy. Seek emergency help for severe breathing trouble, collapse or a baby who cannot feed. If reflux is suspected, ask before using [Acid Reflux Medication](/treatments/medical-management/acid-reflux-medication/).
Questions for your doctor
Could the timing of hiccups suggest reflux or a feeding-position issue? Is the latch effective? What signs would make these episodes urgent?

Not necessarily. Continue if the baby is comfortable; pause for burping and upright holding if sucking becomes difficult.
When are hiccups unusual?
Episodes deserve review when they repeatedly disrupt feeding or sleep, or come with breathing trouble, vomiting or poor growth.
