What should you know about breast yeast rash?

The rash commonly appears beneath the breast or around other skin folds. It may be bright red, moist, cracked, itchy, or burning, with small spots just beyond the main patch. Heat, sweat, friction, and tight clothing can encourage irritation and yeast growth. Similar appearances can come from Intertrigo, Contact Dermatitis, psoriasis, ringworm, or other causes, so colour alone is not diagnostic.

Gently wash the area, pat it completely dry, change damp bras or clothing, and choose breathable fabrics. Avoid fragranced products, vigorous rubbing, and sharing towels. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal treatment is appropriate, how to use it, and whether breastfeeding changes the choice. Do not use leftover steroid cream alone, because it can alter the appearance or worsen an infection.

Arrange a review if the rash is painful, spreading, recurrent, cracked, oozing, or not improving with advised care. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly increasing breast redness or warmth, marked swelling, pus, severe pain, or feeling unwell. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or recent antibiotic treatment may need earlier assessment.
