What should you know about breast skin thickening?

Thickening may feel rough, leathery, swollen, or firmer than nearby skin. Repeated scratching can make itchy skin thicker; eczema such as Atopic Dermatitis may affect the breast or the skin beneath it. Sweat, friction, and moisture can also inflame the fold under the breast. A clinician may check both breasts, the nipple, nearby lymph nodes, and the texture and duration of the change. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a medical appointment for a new, unexplained, or persistent change. Note when it began, whether it is itchy or painful, and whether there is redness, warmth, discharge, a lump, or nipple inversion. Use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser on intact skin and avoid scratching, tight clothing, new perfumes, and harsh soaps. Keep the fold dry without rubbing. Do not apply steroid or antifungal treatment to the nipple or breast without advice, especially if breastfeeding.

Seek prompt medical care if thickening is accompanied by rapid swelling, marked redness or warmth, fever, severe pain, bloody nipple discharge, a new lump, skin dimpling, or a nipple that turns inward. An urgent assessment is also appropriate when the breast becomes visibly different over a short time or symptoms worsen despite removing an irritant.

Ask what findings point toward dermatitis, infection, or a breast condition; whether you need imaging or a skin sample; which products are safe for your skin; and how soon the change should be reviewed if it does not settle.
