Breast skin colour changes

Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the change affects one or both breasts and whether it comes with warmth, swelling, pain, a rash, skin thickening, nipple changes, discharge or a lump.

A surface rash may follow friction, sweat, adhesive, soap or a new skin product. Redness with heat, tenderness and swelling can accompany inflammation or infection, particularly during breastfeeding. Bruised-looking colour can follow pressure or injury, although unexplained bruising still deserves attention.

Breast cancer can present with persistent redness, dimpling, thickened skin or a nipple that has newly pulled inward. Paget disease of the breast can present with a scaly, crusted, sore or discoloured nipple and areola. These conditions are possibilities for clinicians to assess; the appearance by itself does not establish a diagnosis.

Look in good light and compare with the other breast. Record when the change began, whether it is expanding, and any link to breastfeeding, injury, exercise, clothing, heat or a new product. A dated photo can help a clinician understand progression, but it should not delay an appointment.

Stop a suspected irritant and use gentle, fragrance-free skin care. Avoid squeezing, vigorous massage, bleaching products or leftover antibiotic and steroid creams, because these can worsen injury or obscure the pattern before examination.

Arrange a prompt appointment for a one-sided change that persists, spreads or returns, or for dimpling, orange-peel texture, nipple inversion, crusting around the nipple, spontaneous discharge, a new lump, or swelling in the armpit. Changes may be subtler on brown or black skin, so compare texture and warmth as well as colour.

Seek same-day care for rapidly worsening redness, marked warmth, severe pain, fever, chills, pus, or feeling acutely unwell. These signs can accompany a breast infection or abscess that needs timely treatment.

Ask whether the pattern looks primarily dermatological or requires breast imaging, and which change should trigger earlier follow-up. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, previous breast procedures, recent injury, eczema, medicines and any family history that may guide examination and testing.
