Peeling skin on the breast

Fine flakes after dry weather, hot showers, friction, or a new product may reflect a damaged skin barrier. Peeling after a red, tender exposure can follow Sunburn. Scaly patches may occur with Psoriasis or another dermatitis. A moist, itchy rash in a fold can be fungal; Athlete's Foot is one example of a fungal condition, although breast peeling needs its own assessment. Peeling focused on the nipple, especially with discharge or a persistent one-sided change, should be examined rather than treated as simple dryness.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat the area dry. Apply a bland moisturiser and wear breathable clothing that reduces rubbing. Do not pull loose skin, scrub flakes, use fragranced oils, or apply leftover steroid or antifungal medicine. Note whether the peeling is on one or both sides, whether it itches or hurts, and whether a new product or sun exposure came first.

Arrange an examination when peeling persists, returns, spreads, or forms cracks, sores, blisters, or bleeding. Seek prompt care for warmth, swelling, increasing pain, fever, pus, a new lump, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a persistent nipple rash. Emergency help is needed for rapid facial swelling or breathing difficulty. A clinician can decide whether testing or prescription treatment is needed.

Ask whether the pattern suggests irritation, dermatitis, fungal infection, or another cause; whether the nipple needs specific examination; and which moisturiser or medicine is suitable. Bring a list of products used and describe any recent sun exposure, sweating, or breast changes.
