Low breast milk supply on one side

Short answer
It is common for one breast to produce less milk than the other, often because of differences in stimulation, latch, milk flow, or breast anatomy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Natural variation
- Breasts can differ in storage, flow, and response to stimulation.
- Supply signal
- Effective milk removal from a breast encourages that breast to keep producing.
- Pump check
- Flange fit should be assessed separately for each breast.
Why milk production can differ
Each breast responds mainly to how often and how effectively milk is removed from that side. A baby may prefer one position, latch more deeply on one breast, or encounter a slower flow on the less-used side. Previous breast surgery, nipple shape, discomfort, inflammation, or a blocked area can also influence removal. Unequal pumping volumes do not by themselves measure total supply, because pump fit and response may differ between breasts.
How to encourage the lower-producing side
When your baby is calm and hungry, offer the lower-producing breast first and watch for deep, rhythmic sucks and swallowing. Try a different feeding position if neck preference or comfort seems to affect the latch. Gentle breast compression during active feeding may help milk flow. If extra stimulation is appropriate, express that breast after or between feeds without creating pain. Check that the pump flange fits each breast separately; the same size may not suit both sides. Avoid forceful massage over a tender or swollen area.
When a one-sided change needs care
Arrange a feeding assessment if the difference appeared suddenly, persists despite effective milk removal, causes pain, or is accompanied by nipple damage. Promptly contact a healthcare professional for a hot, red, swollen breast, fever, flu-like symptoms, or worsening tenderness. A distinct breast lump that does not soften after feeding also needs examination. Seek help for your baby if swallowing is limited, wet nappies decrease, feeding becomes weak, or there are concerns about alertness or growth.
What to ask at an appointment
Ask whether a full feed can be observed on both sides and whether your baby's head movement, mouth function, or position may explain the preference. Mention previous breast procedures, new medicines, nipple changes, pain, or a persistent lump. A lactation professional can also compare flange fit and help build a plan that supports the lower-producing breast while keeping feeds manageable.

Questions people ask
What should you know about breast milk supply low one side?
Different output between breasts is often manageable and may reflect breast preference, latch, stimulation, pump fit, or anatomy. Your baby's overall milk intake matters more than perfect symmetry.
Can I continue feeding if one breast makes less milk?
Often, yes. Continue responsive feeding while monitoring effective swallowing, nappies, and growth. Seek individual support if your baby is not transferring milk well or the breast is painful.
Will using only the lower-producing side make both breasts equal?
Extra effective stimulation may increase production on that side, but equal output is not required. A tailored plan can avoid discomfort or excessive fullness in the other breast.
