Breast milk supply seems low at night

Short answer
Milk supply can seem lower at night because babies often feed more frequently and breasts may feel softer, but these changes alone do not prove that milk production is low.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Evening pattern
- Frequent cluster feeding can be normal and does not by itself confirm low supply.
- Better indicators
- Swallowing, wet nappies, alertness and weight gain are more informative than breast fullness alone.
- Helpful assessment
- Watching a full feed can reveal latch or milk-transfer difficulties.
Why supply may seem lower in the evening
Many babies cluster-feed in the evening, asking to nurse repeatedly over a short period. This behaviour can support milk production and may also help a baby settle; it does not automatically mean the breasts are empty. Breasts commonly feel less full after frequent feeding, while milk continues to be made during a feed.
Pump output is not a direct measure of everything available to a baby. Output can vary with pump fit, suction, timing, stress and how recently the baby fed. More useful clues include hearing or seeing swallowing, the baby's pattern of wet nappies, alertness when awake and weight gain over time.
Steps that can support feeding
Offer the breast when your baby shows early feeding cues such as stirring, bringing hands to the mouth or turning toward touch. Let the baby feed actively on the first side, then offer the second. Skin-to-skin contact and gentle breast compression during slower sucking may encourage continued milk transfer.
Check that the latch is comfortable and that sucking changes into a deeper rhythm with swallowing. If feeds remain painful, the baby slips off repeatedly, or you are concerned about weight or nappies, a lactation professional can observe a complete feed and assess latch, milk transfer and any pumping equipment. Avoid starting supplements or medicines solely because breasts feel soft; an individual feeding assessment can identify what is needed while protecting milk removal.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt clinical advice if your baby has fewer wet nappies than usual, is difficult to wake for feeds, feeds weakly, has a dry mouth, develops increasing yellowing of the skin or eyes, or is not gaining weight as expected. Urgent assessment is needed if the baby is unusually floppy, has trouble breathing, has a seizure or cannot feed.
Seek care for yourself if you develop fever with a hot, red or increasingly painful area of the breast, feel acutely unwell, or have severe nipple damage. These symptoms may need assessment while feeding support continues.
Questions for your clinician or lactation professional
Ask whether your baby's weight pattern and nappies indicate adequate intake, whether latch and swallowing show effective milk transfer, and whether health conditions or medicines could affect feeding. If expressing milk is part of your plan, ask for a pump-flange fit check and a schedule tailored to when your baby feeds.

Questions people ask
Do softer breasts at night mean they are empty?
No. Softer breasts often reflect frequent feeding and normal adjustment of milk production. Milk continues to be produced, so softness alone cannot show how much a baby receives.
Does a small evening pump amount prove low milk supply?
No. Pump output changes with timing, pump fit, suction and recent feeds, and a baby may remove milk differently from a pump. Assess the whole feeding picture instead.
Can frequent night feeding help milk production?
Frequent, effective milk removal signals the breasts to keep producing milk. If feeding is painful or swallowing is rarely heard, an observed feed can help identify a correctable problem.
