What should you know about breast ingrown hair?

Ingrown hairs can follow shaving, waxing, plucking, or close trimming. Friction and tightly curled hair can make it easier for a growing hair to turn into the skin. The bump may have a visible hair, but it can also resemble a pimple or inflamed follicle. Folliculitis, Keratosis Pilaris, and Razor Bumps can look similar, so repeated or widespread bumps should not be labelled at home.

Breast skin and the areola are sensitive. A bump beside the nipple may have a different cause from an ingrown hair, particularly if there is discharge, a deeper lump, or persistent change.

Pause shaving, waxing, and plucking until the area settles. Wash gently, use a warm—not hot—compress, and avoid squeezing, digging, or trying to pull out a deeply buried hair. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing. Do not apply strong acids, fragranced products, or antiseptics to broken skin without advice.
