What should you know about breast heat rash?

Heat rash, also called miliaria or prickly heat, can appear under the breast or where clothing holds moisture against the skin. Sweat ducts become blocked or irritated, producing tiny bumps, a stinging feeling, or itch. The area may look pink, red, or darker than surrounding skin depending on skin tone. A rash in this location can also have another cause, such as contact irritation, yeast, or inflammation, so persistent symptoms deserve assessment.

A clinician can distinguish heat rash from other causes by asking about heat, sweating, products, and the rash's texture. Skin bumps, skin rash, and skin redness are useful descriptions, not diagnoses.

Cool and gently wash the area, then pat it completely dry. Wear breathable clothing and a supportive bra that does not trap dampness. Change out of sweaty clothing promptly, and avoid heavy creams, fragranced products, and vigorous rubbing while the skin is irritated.
