Breast fat transfer 1 year later: what to know

The breasts may look softer and feel more natural than during early healing. Some transferred fat is absorbed by the body, while the remaining fat can behave like fat elsewhere on your body. A small firm area may reflect scar tissue or fat necrosis, but a new or changing lump cannot be identified safely from symptoms alone. Mammograms and other breast imaging can show changes related to surgery; tell the imaging team about the procedure.

Compare changes over time rather than judging the result from one photograph. Keep your weight reasonably stable if you want the breast volume to remain more consistent, and follow the screening plan advised for your age and personal risk. Seek prompt medical assessment for a new breast lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, redness with warmth, swelling, fever, or pain that is worsening. These findings have several possible causes, and a breast examination is needed to sort them out. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain needs emergency care.

Ask whether your current firmness fits the expected post-operative pattern, whether you need targeted imaging, how future screening should mention the graft, and whether weight change or another breast procedure could affect the result. Ask which signs from the donor area should also be reported.
