What should you know about breast enlargement using fat transfer?

Fat is suctioned from a donor area, prepared outside the body and inserted into the breasts in small layers. This can add fullness and improve an uneven outline without an implant. The amount that remains is individual, and the breasts may look different while swelling settles. Body-weight changes can also affect the appearance later.

Your surgeon will consider the amount of available fat, breast skin, existing asymmetry and your desired change. The procedure can affect both the breasts and the donor area, with possible bruising, tenderness, scars, firm areas or contour changes. Future breast examinations and imaging should be discussed before treatment.

At consultation, explain your preferred shape, prior breast surgery, medical conditions, medicines, nicotine use and reproductive plans. Confirm the anaesthesia plan, preparation instructions, expected scars, time away from work, activity limits and how follow-up will be arranged.

Afterward, protect the treated areas as instructed and take only recommended medicines. Organise help with daily tasks, wear support or compression garments as directed, and gradually return to activity. Early swelling is a poor guide to the settled result, so use review appointments to track progress.

Report worsening pain, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, fever, pus, wound separation or a new breast lump to the surgical team. Chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden severe swelling require urgent care. Any persistent lump or unexpected breast change should be examined, including after the initial recovery period.

Ask whether your goals are achievable with fat alone, how the donor area will be selected, what changes screening may require, how uneven volume is addressed, what recovery support you need and when the outcome will be reviewed.
