Breast cyst during your period: what to know

This cyclical change can make an existing lump easier to notice, but the point in your cycle does not establish what the lump is. New breast lumps should receive a clinical assessment.

During the menstrual cycle, breast tissue may become fuller, nodular and sensitive. A fluid-filled cyst can feel smooth or rounded and may move slightly under the fingers, yet benign solid lumps can have overlapping features. Pain can also come from the surrounding breast tissue rather than the cyst alone.

Some cyclical tenderness settles after bleeding ends. If the lump remains, that does not by itself identify a serious cause; it means the area should be evaluated on its own features rather than assumed to be menstrual.

Wear a well-fitting supportive bra and try a wrapped warm or cool compress for tenderness. If you use an over-the-counter pain medicine, check that it is suitable with your medical conditions, pregnancy status and other medicines, and follow the package directions.

Record where the lump is and how it changes after your period instead of examining it repeatedly. Book a breast assessment for a new lump. If imaging is advised, breast ultrasound can show whether the finding is filled with fluid or is solid.

Contact a clinician promptly if the lump grows, feels hard or fixed, persists beyond the menstrual change, or comes with nipple discharge, nipple inversion, skin puckering, thickening, persistent redness, or an armpit lump. These features require examination regardless of whether the breast is painful.

Rapidly increasing warmth, redness and swelling with fever or marked illness warrants urgent care because a breast infection or abscess may be present.

Tell the clinician when you first noticed the lump, where you are in your cycle, and whether it has changed between cycles. Useful questions include whether imaging is appropriate, what findings support a cyst, how discomfort can be treated, and when the area should be checked again.
