Breast cyst before a period: what to know

A change that follows a cycle pattern may become less noticeable after menstruation begins. That pattern can help a clinician understand your symptoms, although it cannot determine the type of lump by itself.

Hormonal shifts before menstruation can increase fluid retention and sensitivity in breast tissue. An existing cyst may therefore seem more prominent, tight, or tender against the surrounding tissue.

Breast cysts are fluid-filled spaces, but other breast changes can also feel smooth, firm, or movable. A clinician can assess the location and texture; ultrasound may then show whether the area is fluid-filled or solid.

Record the side and location, whether discomfort is focal or widespread, and how the area feels after your period begins. Use gentle observation rather than frequent squeezing, which may leave the tissue irritated.

A well-fitting supportive bra may reduce movement-related soreness. Some people find a wrapped warm or cool compress soothing; protect the skin and stop if it causes discomfort. Book an appointment for any newly discovered breast lump.

Contact a clinician promptly if a lump grows, remains after menstruation, or is accompanied by skin puckering, nipple inversion, spontaneous or bloody nipple discharge, or a new swelling in the armpit.

Urgent assessment is appropriate for a breast that is hot, red, rapidly swelling, or very painful, particularly if you also have fever or feel unwell. Urgency comes from these warning signs, not from where you are in your cycle.

Describe the cycle pattern and ask whether an ultrasound would help characterize the lump. If a cyst is confirmed, ask whether observation, drainage for troublesome symptoms, or another review is suitable and which changes should prompt an earlier return.
