What to expect from a breast biopsy procedure

The clinician selects the approach according to the target's size, depth, location, and appearance on imaging. A needle may collect cells, fluid, or cores of tissue. An area visible only on a scan can be sampled with ultrasound or mammography guidance, while some findings require a surgical approach.

Laboratory examination identifies the nature of the sampled change. The biopsy recommendation itself is not a diagnosis of breast cancer, and further management depends on whether the tissue result explains the imaging finding.

Beforehand, share your medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, pregnancy possibility, and prior reactions to anaesthetic or adhesives. Follow individual instructions about eating, drinking, and blood-thinning medicine rather than changing treatment yourself.

During a needle procedure, cleaning and local anaesthetic come before imaging and tissue collection. Pressure and a dressing follow. Arrange transport if sedation is planned, protect the wound as directed, limit strenuous upper-body activity for the stated period, and attend the arranged results discussion.

Bruising and tenderness can follow sampling, but the clinic should assess persistent wound bleeding, swelling that grows quickly, severe or escalating pain, fever, cloudy discharge, or spreading redness and heat. Emergency assessment is appropriate if you become faint, develop chest or breathing symptoms, or have signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Confirm the exact biopsy type, the reason it suits the imaging finding, whether sedation or a marker is expected, and which activities to avoid. Also ask who reviews the laboratory and imaging information together, when you will hear the result, and what happens if they do not match.
