Itching after a breast biopsy

It should not be treated by scratching or placing an unapproved cream over the puncture. The pattern matters: itching limited to the dressing outline suggests skin irritation, while spreading redness, heat, increasing pain or discharge needs clinical advice.

Healing skin can feel tight, prickly or itchy as the small incision closes. A sharply outlined rash where tape touched the skin may be contact irritation or an allergic response to adhesive. Antiseptic left on nearby skin, sweat trapped under a dressing or friction from a bra can also irritate the area.

Infection is more concerning when changes progress rather than settle. Increasing warmth, expanding redness, worsening tenderness, pus or fever should not be dismissed as ordinary healing. Bruising alone can change colour as it resolves and does not necessarily indicate infection.

Leave skin closure strips or surgical glue in place for the period specified by your biopsy team. Keep the site clean and dry according to their instructions, choose a soft supportive bra, and press gently around rather than scratch across the dressing. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease irritation if your aftercare sheet permits it.

Before using an antihistamine, steroid cream or antibiotic ointment, ask the clinic or a pharmacist whether it is appropriate and where it may be applied. Products placed directly on a fresh opening can interfere with adhesive or irritate the wound. Photographing a visible rash can help the clinic judge whether it follows the tape or is spreading.

Call the biopsy team the same day for expanding redness, marked warmth, worsening swelling or pain, cloudy drainage, wound opening, fever or feeling unwell. Get urgent emergency help if itching occurs with facial or tongue swelling, widespread hives, wheezing, breathing difficulty, dizziness or collapse, as these can accompany a severe allergic reaction.

Describe when the itch began and whether it sits beneath the adhesive, around the puncture or across a wider area. Ask when the dressing may come off, what can safely soothe exposed skin, and where to send a photograph. Mention previous reactions to medical tape, antiseptics or skin glue.
