Breast biopsy during your period

Menstrual hormone changes can make some breasts feel fuller or more sensitive, so the procedure may feel less comfortable than it would at another point in the cycle. Do not cancel on your own; contact the biopsy team if tenderness is severe or you are unsure about their instructions.

A period does not contaminate a sample taken from the breast. The clinician targets the area identified on examination or imaging, and the laboratory assesses that breast tissue directly. Cycle-related swelling may change how the breast feels to you, but the imaging guidance used for a needle biopsy helps the clinician locate the intended area.

Tell the team if there is any chance of pregnancy, particularly when the planned procedure uses mammography guidance. This allows them to choose appropriate imaging precautions. Menstrual bleeding itself is separate from bleeding at the biopsy site.

Follow the clinic's directions about medicines. Give them a complete list of prescription medicines, non-prescription pain relievers and supplements, especially anything that affects clotting. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician managing it agrees.

Wear a supportive, comfortable bra and mention cycle-related soreness before the procedure so positioning can be adjusted. Afterward, keep the dressing in place for the stated time, use a wrapped cold pack if advised, and avoid rubbing or soaking the puncture site until the team says it is suitable.

Contact the biopsy service promptly if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, swelling is rapidly enlarging, pain is worsening rather than settling, or the site becomes increasingly red, hot or drains pus. Fever or feeling acutely unwell also needs timely assessment. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, fainting or a severe allergic reaction.

Ask which biopsy method and imaging guidance are planned, whether you should change any medicines, and how long to keep the dressing dry. You can also ask whom to call for bleeding or swelling and how the result will be communicated.
