Breakbone fever symptoms: what to know

People may develop pain behind the eyes, marked muscle or joint pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, or unusual tiredness. A rash may appear as the fever changes. These features overlap with other infections, including COVID-19, chickenpox, and common cold illnesses, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Rest and take frequent sips of fluid. Use only a fever medicine recommended for you by a clinician or pharmacist; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen until dengue has been considered because they may increase bleeding risk. Keep away from mosquito bites while unwell, and arrange medical advice promptly if dengue is possible after travel or local exposure.

Seek emergency help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, extreme weakness, or very little urine. Warning signs can appear as the fever settles, so worsening symptoms need urgent assessment even if the temperature is lower.

Ask whether testing is appropriate, which fluids and fever medicines are suitable, how to monitor for bleeding, and when you should return for review. Mention recent travel, mosquito exposure, pregnancy, medical conditions, and every medicine you take.
