Short answer

Braxton Hicks contractions have no fixed onset, although they commonly become easier to notice as pregnancy progresses.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Is there a set time when they start?

One person may recognise them relatively early while another may not feel them at all. Their onset does not provide a countdown to labour.

Recognising the first episodes

The first noticeable episode may feel as though part or all of the abdomen turns firm, holds briefly, and releases. Practice contractions are generally inconsistent: the next episode may feel different or may not arrive for some time.

As birth approaches, practice tightenings can feel stronger without becoming labour. What matters is whether they establish a persistent, intensifying pattern and whether other warning symptoms appear.

What to try after the first episode

Note what you were doing, then change position, rest, drink water, and empty your bladder. Check whether the abdomen becomes soft again and whether the tightening returns. Use your maternity service's contact instructions if you are unsure, rather than trying to diagnose the episode yourself.

Changes that should prompt a call

Seek prompt maternity assessment for a regular or strengthening contraction pattern, ongoing pain, vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, fever, pelvic pressure, or persistent backache. Report reduced fetal movement once you have an established usual pattern. Heavy bleeding, collapse, severe continuous pain, or significant breathing difficulty calls for emergency assistance.

Personalising the advice

Ask how your stage of pregnancy and health history affect when you should be examined. Confirm what fluid leakage can look like, how to respond to movement changes, and which local maternity service to call when the clinic is closed.

Questions people ask

Can Braxton Hicks start suddenly?

You may become aware of a tightening suddenly, even if subtler uterine activity occurred before. Its subsequent pattern is more informative than the first sensation.

Will I definitely feel practice contractions?

No. Awareness varies, and not noticing them does not by itself indicate a problem with the pregnancy.
