Are Braxton Hicks contractions normal?

Short answer
Braxton Hicks contractions are usually a normal part of pregnancy, but regular, painful or intensifying contractions need maternity assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Are Braxton Hicks contractions normal?
They are often called practice contractions or false labour. The uterus tightens and then relaxes, without the continuing pattern of cervical change expected in established labour.
What the tightening means
A Braxton Hicks contraction may make the abdomen feel firm or drawn tight. These tightenings tend to be irregular, may settle with movement or rest, and do not usually become steadily stronger and closer together. Dehydration, activity, a full bladder or sex can make them more noticeable.
Labour contractions develop a more organised pattern and generally become stronger, longer or more frequent. Sensation alone cannot always distinguish practice contractions from early labour, particularly before full term, so a changing pattern deserves assessment.
What you can do
Pause and notice whether the tightenings are developing a pattern. Drink water, empty your bladder and change position: rest if you have been active, or take gentle movement if you have been sitting. Avoid pushing through discomfort.
Follow any personalised instructions from your maternity team. If the contractions continue despite these measures, become difficult to speak or move through, or simply feel different from your usual tightenings, call your maternity unit for advice.
When to seek maternity care
Contact your maternity unit promptly if contractions become regular, stronger or closer together, especially before full term. Seek urgent assessment for vaginal bleeding, leaking or a gush of fluid, reduced baby movements, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell.
Do not wait for contractions to become painful when fluid may be leaking or your baby's movement pattern has changed. If you cannot reach your maternity team and symptoms seem urgent, attend emergency care.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask how your unit wants you to monitor contractions, which number to call outside clinic hours, and where to go for assessment. If you have pregnancy complications or a history of early birth, ask whether your threshold for calling should be different.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks contractions be uncomfortable?
Yes. They may feel tight, firm or uncomfortable even when they are not established labour. Pain that is severe, persistent or increasing needs maternity advice.
How can I tell Braxton Hicks contractions from labour?
Braxton Hicks contractions are commonly irregular and may ease with hydration, rest or movement. Labour contractions tend to form a pattern and grow stronger, longer or closer together. Contact your maternity unit if you are unsure.
Should I call if contractions happen before full term?
Yes, contact your maternity unit promptly if they are regular, persistent or intensifying. Early assessment is also needed if they occur with pressure, backache, bleeding, fluid leakage or a change in baby movements.
