Short answer
Braxton Hicks contractions can occur early, but noticeable tightening is more often recognised later in pregnancy.

Can Braxton Hicks happen in the first trimester?
In early pregnancy, brief cramps or pulling sensations can have several causes and cannot be identified as Braxton Hicks from sensation alone. Mention recurrent or worrying pain to your maternity team.
How practice contractions tend to feel
Practice contractions usually feel like a temporary firming across the uterus. They tend to be irregular, do not build into a steadily stronger pattern, and may settle after rest, hydration, or a change of position.
A sharp pain on one side, pain that persists, or cramping with bleeding is not something to label at home as a practice contraction. Those features need individual assessment.
What to do when tightening starts
Pause your activity, sit or lie comfortably, drink water, and notice whether the sensation fades. Emptying a full bladder may also ease uterine irritability. Record where the discomfort occurs, whether it comes and goes, and any discharge or bleeding so you can describe it clearly.
When early-pregnancy pain needs care
Contact your maternity service promptly for bleeding, fluid loss, fever, pain that is severe or worsening, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, marked dizziness, or persistent pain focused on one side. Seek urgent help if you feel faint, collapse, have heavy bleeding, or cannot safely travel for assessment.
Questions for your maternity clinician
Ask whether the location and pattern fit expected pregnancy changes, which symptoms should trigger an urgent call, and whom to contact outside clinic hours. If the sensation keeps returning, ask whether an examination or scan is appropriate for your circumstances.

Questions people ask
Does every first-trimester cramp come from Braxton Hicks?
No. Early-pregnancy cramping has several possible explanations, and its cause depends on the pattern and accompanying symptoms.
Can dehydration make tightening more noticeable?
A low fluid intake can make uterine tightening more noticeable for some people. Drink water, but do not delay care for pain or red-flag symptoms.
