A fingertip pulse oximeter uses light to estimate oxygen saturation and pulse rate. It does not diagnose the reason for breathlessness, and a single changing display may be unreliable. Cold fingers, movement, poor circulation, nail products, a loose fit, or bright light can affect the signal. Skin pigmentation and device limitations can also affect accuracy.

The trend and the person’s condition are more useful than chasing a particular number. Someone may be seriously unwell despite a reading that looks reassuring, while an unexpected reading may need repeating with better positioning.

Rest quietly, warm the hand, remove nail polish if practical, and place the device securely on a finger. Keep the hand still and wait for the display to settle. Repeat an unexpected result after checking the fit and signal. Record the time, symptoms, and reading if a clinician has asked you to monitor at home. Do not change prescribed oxygen or medicine based only on the device.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, or inability to speak in full sentences. Contact a clinician promptly if readings remain unexpectedly low or fall while symptoms worsen. A GP consultation can assess breathing, circulation, medical history, and whether further tests are needed.
