Braces for bow legs: what parents and adults should know

How the structures involved in Bow Legs differ from normal

Short answer

Braces may help selected growing children with bow legs, but they are not suitable for every cause or for routine adult correction.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medical term
Bow legs are also called genu varum.
Key factor
A child's growth stage and the cause of bowing guide treatment.
Brace safety
Fit, skin condition, comfort, and circulation need regular checks.

Can braces correct bow legs?

The decision depends on the child's age, remaining growth, the underlying reason for the alignment, whether both legs look similar, and whether the curve is changing. Many young children have a developmental leg shape that changes as they grow and may only need observation. A brace should be prescribed after an orthopaedic assessment rather than bought and fitted without guidance.

Why the cause and growth stage matter

Bow legs, also called genu varum, describe an outward curve at the knees when the feet are together. The appearance can come from normal development, a growth-plate problem, bone disease, previous injury, or another alignment condition. Bracing can influence growth only in particular situations; it cannot reshape a mature skeleton in the same way.

A clinician examines walking, hip and knee movement, limb symmetry, and the location of the curve. Imaging may be requested when the shape is marked, one-sided, painful, worsening, or outside the expected developmental pattern.

What to do before and during bracing

Arrange an assessment before choosing a brace. If one is prescribed, follow the fitting and wear instructions, attend growth checks, and inspect the skin each day for rubbing, blisters, or persistent redness. Do not pad, bend, or adjust the device unless the orthotist has shown you how.

Comfortable footwear and age-appropriate activity usually remain useful. Paediatric physiotherapy may support strength, balance, walking skills, and safe activity, although exercises alone do not correct every bony alignment problem. For a skeletally mature person with troublesome deformity, an orthopaedic surgeon may discuss options such as osteotomy after assessing symptoms and mechanical alignment.

When to seek medical care

Book a clinical review if bowing is worsening, clearly affects one leg more than the other, causes pain or limping, limits play or walking, or appears alongside poor growth. A brace that repeatedly slips, causes sores, produces numbness, or leaves redness that does not settle after removal also needs prompt reassessment.

Seek urgent care after a significant injury or if the foot becomes cold, pale or blue, sensation is lost, weakness appears suddenly, or severe pain is escalating. Stop using the brace until a clinician has checked any possible circulation, nerve, skin, or injury problem.

Questions to ask at the appointment

Ask what is causing the leg shape, whether it fits an expected growth pattern, and how change will be monitored. If bracing is advised, clarify the goal, fitting plan, wear schedule, permitted activities, skin checks, and signs that require an earlier visit. It is also reasonable to ask what options would be considered if the alignment continues to progress.

Questions people ask

Should every child with bow legs wear a brace?

No. Some bowing is part of normal early development, while other patterns need investigation or targeted treatment. An assessment should come before bracing.

Can an adult brace straighten bow legs?

A brace may support comfort or function in selected adults, but it does not usually change mature bone alignment. An orthopaedic assessment can identify suitable nonsurgical or surgical options.

Can exercises replace a prescribed brace?

Exercises may improve strength, balance, and movement control, but they do not address every cause of bony bowing. The plan should match the diagnosis and growth stage.
